How are Alexa Ranks determined?

ALEXA,the web information specialist is’s the Google’s page rank,Alexa ranks are considered important.Alexa’s Traffic Ranks are for top level domains only.Websites are ranked by Alexa, based on factors like traffic, reach etc.One of the great advantages to making use of the Alexa Ranking system is that it allows you to compare different web sites.

In this article,I have described how the Alexa rank is calculated. It is basically Dependant on the Traffic of the website or Blog.

First of all, note that the statistics of the websites ranked below 100000 are not accurate. And sometimes, sites ranked lesser than 100000 even get “NO DATA” when the rank is accessed.

Alexa uses many methods and sources to determine a site’s rank. The Alexa Traffic Rank of a given website isn’t determined solely by the traffic to that site, but takes into account the traffic to all sites and ranks sites relative to each other. The basic fact is that the ranks get better as the traffic gets better.

Here are some important factors which are used to determine the Alexa ranking of a website:

  • Traffic
  • Reach
  • Page views
  • movers
  • shakers

The main Alexa traffic rank is based on a value obtained from Traffic and pageviews over time. The site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users,as the value is based on both the metrics. The traffic stats are obtained from Alexa toolbars and many sources. The three-month change is determined by comparing the site’s current rank with its rank from three months ago.Page views measure the number of pages viewed by site visitors.Multiple page views by a single user are ignored in a particular day.If this isn’t ignored,it is obvious that the rank will became unreliable.

Reach is the number of users of a site.It is measured as the % of the people using the site among the total internet users. In simpler words,It is the ratio of the users of the site and the total internet users, expressed in percentage.

These Figures reflect the change in average users of a site. The more greater(positive) the change, the higher the site will be on the move ahead. The percent change shown on the Movers and Shakers list is based on the change in reach of the site(ie,the users).

These are the significant metrics that determine a site’s ALEXA ranking.

I hope that it isn’t too complicated. I’ve done my best to present this simple.

  1. Install the Alexa Toolbar
  2. Use the Alexa Redirect URL( Followed by your website URL)
  3. Add the Alexa Widget to your web site
  4. Get listed in search engines
  5. have more sites linking to yours.

Believe me alexa rank more depend on content then traffic, there are sites with more traffic but less fresh content and bad alexa, where as site with low traffic more fresh content and good alexa.
